Tēnā koutou!
Wow! Our school has really embraced Te Reo Māori Week for the first time and what a week it has been!
Each morning the whole school has been meeting in the hall to share our karakia together and sing a waiata to set us on our way for the day. This also allowed teachers and students to share any special things that were happening during that particular day.
Tuesday morning began with a special ceremony for a very special visitor. Here is a quick story from Annabelle Jones:
Matua Jerome Cavanagh came to our school and we welcomed him with a Mihi Whakatau. He spoke fluent te reo Māori during his whaikorero which was amazing as we do not often get the opportunity to witness such things in person.
He told us all about his musical instruments made from whale bone, shells, rocks and wood. He also taught us a couple of Māori games that we could play inside when it was raining.
It was an amazing opportunity to have him at our school sharing his knowledge.

Many of the syndicates have been involved with Māori activities all week and our students have truly enjoyed all that they have experienced.
Both Kapa Haka groups have been busy and you can catch-up on what they have been doing by going to the Kapa Haka blog.
